How does in-browser image compression work?
Your image is decoded by the browser, drawn onto an internal canvas at the size you choose, and re-encoded as JPEG or WebP at the quality you set (PNG is lossless). The smaller result is downloaded straight from your device — the original file is never uploaded.
How much can I compress without visible quality loss?
For web use, 70-85% quality on JPEG and 60-80% on WebP is usually imperceptible while cutting size 40-70%. Preview the result and nudge the slider until artifacts appear, then step back one notch.
Should I compress PNG or convert to WebP?
PNG is lossless; heavy PNG compression just strips metadata. For photos, convert to WebP at ~75% — it beats PNG on size at equal quality. Keep PNG only for transparency or line art.
