When should you crop before compressing?
Cropping first removes the pixels you don't need, so the file is smaller before you even compress it. It also lets you lock a clean aspect ratio (1:1, 16:9, and so on) for thumbnails and social cards.
What aspect ratio should I crop to?
1:1 for profile photos, 16:9 for banners, 4:5 for portrait social posts. Cropping to the right ratio up front avoids awkward auto-crops by each platform.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping alone does not re-encode, so the kept region stays as sharp as the original. Quality only drops if you then export at a lower quality or upscale the crop.
